Healing Timeline

Your tattoo will typically take 4 to 6 weeks to heal enough for swimming and sunscreen. Keep in mind that healing time varies depending on the size, location, and style of your tattoo. Always check with your artist about your specific timeline.

If You Leave With Second Skin

First 3 to 5 Days

  • Keep the site clean and dry.
  • You can shower normally, no problem.
  • The bandage is water-resistant, not waterproof, so don't soak or submerge it.

Removing It

  • Soap it up in the shower and peel it off slowly.
  • Start from the bottom to help release the seal more easily.
  • Wash the area with unscented antibacterial soap and apply unscented lotion.

After That

  • Keep it clean and dry.
  • Stick with unscented antibacterial soap and lotion.

Important

  • Don't use adhesive bandages if you have skin conditions or adhesive allergies.
  • Wait 42 to 72 hours before working out (ask your artist if you have questions).
  • Don't wear second skin while working out — sweat will get trapped underneath.

If You Leave With an Absorbency Bandage

First Day

  • Keep the bandage on for at least 3 hours to absorb the plasma.
  • Take it off before bed.
  • Clean with unscented antibacterial soap.
  • Use unscented lotion if it feels tight or itchy.

Next Few Weeks

  • Keep it clean and dry.
  • Use unscented soap and lotion.
  • Wait 42 to 72 hours before working out (ask your artist if you have questions).

General Aftercare Rules

Do This

  • Wash your hands before touching the area.
  • Keep it clean and dry for the first 3 weeks.
  • Give yourself time before jumping back into normal activities.

Don't Do This

  • Don't submerge it in water (pools, hot tubs, lakes, oceans, etc.).
  • Don't pick, scratch, or peel at any scabs or dry skin.
  • Don't wear tight clothes that rub on the tattoo while it's healing.
  • Don't expose it to harsh sun before it's fully healed.
  • Don't use exfoliants on a healing tattoo.
  • Don't let pets lay on or lick your tattoo.
  • Don't use petroleum-based products until it's fully healed.

One More Thing

Your tattoo is basically an open wound, so it needs time and care to heal properly. If something doesn't feel right or you're not sure about something, reach out to your artist.
